Lazy Ants or Filippo Fiorini as he is known to friends, is a DJ/producer from Milan, Italy who has worked with the likes of Crookers, Act Yo Age, Ku Bo, Larry Tee and Blatta & Inesha to name a few. He’s recently worked with Crookers on their Dr. Gonzo project with the new tune ‘Carcola’ being played on Annie Mac’s radio show. With a bunch of remixes being released in the upcoming months, I got the chance to ask Lazy Ants what he’s been upto and what he’s been cooking up in the studio. He was also nice enough to do an exclusive mix for us featuring his own tunes and new music from some of the big names in the biz. This is the first interview for the blog and we plan on doing more in the future. Check it.
OK first off, you’re name is Lazy Ants, is there any story behind that and how did it come about?
There is a funny story behind Lazy Ants. One night, I was with my friend NT89 (at the beginning there were two of us), and we were looking for a cool name that nobody had used before and people had never heard of, but came up with nothing. I was on Skype with a friend of mine and he was listening to our “trials and errors” and shortly after, he told us: “you should try something like Lazy Ants, it sounds really cool”.
How Long have you been producing and did you start off producing Electronic music or did you experiment with other genres?
I started in 1999 just for fun with Reason but I did not like that period of time very much, it was not my best work. Then little by little something changed and I’ve started to make music the way I always wanted to. Yes I’ve tried other genres, in 2010 I made beats for an Italian rapper with my friends. That was a beautiful experience and I would like to do it again in the future because Hip Hop is a part of my music background.
You’ve done remixes for producers like Crookers, Larry Tee, Trash Yourself & Toxic Avenger and Blatta & Inesha, out of that bunch who was the most fun to work with and why?
They are all big producers and It was very cool making remixes with all of them. Each remix has been a very important/big experience for me and I believe that I have learnt a lot from these experiences. Now I can say that my favourite remix is the remix that I did for Crookers’ ‘Royal T’.
You’ve recently been involved with Crookers’ new Dr Gonzo project, how did that happen and what’s it like working with producers of their status as opposed to working with new producers or producers that aren’t as well known?
The Crookers have been my favourite producers all along, and having the opportunity to work with them for me was super and made me very happy. They have always been very helpful and have given me really good advice with my music and the scene in general.
Now being Italian, you must be a huge fan of Football. Aside from DJ’ing and producing what else do you like to do when you’re not working?
Ahahaha, yes Italy is a country where football is the favourite sport but I am not so good at playing it. Sometimes I play five-a-side football but with poor results. Well when I’m not DJ’ing or producing, I like to spend my time with friends going out otherwise I stay at home and watch various TV series’.
Can you tell us your plans for the rest of the year? Will you be doing any other collaborations and do you have any other releases coming up?
This month I have some new tunes that will be released, a new track with Macrobiotics (Nic Sarno & Dargen D’amico) and also one for Schlachthofbronx, will be released the middle of July. There’s also a collaboration with Acid Jacks ‘Super Techno Acid’ and a remix for Silver Medallion that I’ve done with Norihito Ogawa, a young and very interesting artist that will be released by DJ Benzi’s label.
A few days ago, I found out that Fatboy Slim has mashed one of my pieces with one of Dr Gonzo’s and it will be released as on official edit. And I believe, he will publish it on his website, which makes me very proud of my work. In August there will be another release on Mixmash, Laidback Luke’s label.
At the moment I’m finishing a few remixes. One for Oh Snap!, another for Codes that will be released on DJ Craze’s Slow Roast label and one for The Whip for Southern Fried. After finishing these remixes I plan to concentrate all my efforts on my own tracks and would like to finish an EP for Southern Fried and an EP for the legendary label Nervous of NY. As well as starting projects with Keith and Supa , Oh Snap!, Silver Medallion, Rob3 and The Eleven.
Is there anything you’d like to share with everyone, any last words? Thanks for your time and giving us this awesome mix.
Mmmmm what can I say, now? If you want I can teach you how to cook a very good Italian ‘pasta alla carbonara’ ahahahah.
Wouldn’t hurt, a good carbonara always goes down well. Looks like good tunes aren’t the only think Lazy Ants is good at cooking up. For more music from Lazy Ants check him out on Myspace and you can also follow him on Twitter. If you haven’t heard his new tune ‘Carcola’ on Dr. Gonzo’s new ‘The Gonzo Anthem’ EP, go here to check it out.
